Chapter Ten
“Why didn’t you say you were hurt?”
Anarr blinked his eyes a few times and tried to focus on Renard’s angry face, just inches from his own. “I-I didn’t realize I was. I guess the adrenalin… I only felt it just now.”
“I need to pull this out so I can get your boot off and see how bad this is. I can’t cut your boot off because you’ll need it.” He leaned back on his heels and regarded Anarr closely. “I don’t suppose you could just shift into your tiger?”
“I could, but not here with all of you around. I wouldn’t have any real awareness of who you were and I’d attack you. Besides, I’d still need to get this boot off first.”
Renard nodded and then someone knelt down beside Anarr. “Hold my hand, darling. And don’t look at it.” Anarr looked up into Blake’s face and he’d never been so glad to see anyone in his life.
“Omak,” he said, and blinked harder to hide the tears that had sprung to his eyes. “I thought you were…” Blake had been so uncharacteristically quiet, Anarr had been afraid something bad had happened to him and to see him kneeling beside him, his face calm and comforting instead of shocked and staring was a little overwhelming and the best tonic he could have had. He reached for Blake’s hand and felt his other hand cup his chin and raise it so that he was staring up at him.
“I was a little stunned, I guess, by all that had happened. But then I saw you fall and I knew you needed me. Are you all right, darling? You know, you boys are always hurting yourselves. I actually considered making Vannos wear a helmet when he was little, but your father talked me out of it. I finally settled on putting a harness on the two of you to keep you from running amuck and getting into trouble, because you would climb right out of your stroller. You should have seen the looks the Tygerians gave me over those harnesses. Not to mention the strollers. They, of course, let their children run wild.”
“Omak,” Anarr said, feeling his face get hot. “You’re embarrassing me.”
“That’s my job, dear. It’s just another service I offer. Be glad I care enough.” He smiled down at him though, and winced in sympathy as Renard grasped the piece of metal and worked it slowly and carefully from the wound. Anarr managed not to scream, but it was a close thing and he got a little woozy for a moment. Then Renard was easing his boot off and made a slight hissing sound when he saw all the blood.
Anarr was feeling faint when Blake pulled his chin up sharply again. “Look at me, dear, when I talk to you. Mikos was a handful too. I remember one time when he was a little over a cycle and a half old, he was amusing himself in his crib by zipping and unzipping his footie pajamas that I had ordered all the way from Earth by way of the Nilanium traders.
